Profile

Knowledge, Life, Beauty - a Froebelian approach to learning in the early years

The Kindergarten takes children from 2 to 5 years and is in a beautiful rural location between Lewes and Uckfield at Easons Green. The Kindergarten guides children as they take their first steps towards learning and independence indoors and out. The Kindergarten is run with a strong, Froebelian influence, where the belief is that, through engaging with the world, understanding unfolds. We value giving children opportunities for uninterrupted play - as a creative activity and a way for children to learn and discover about the world around them.

The Kindergarten is housed on the ground floor of the Infant House at Annan. There are several large rooms providing beautiful areas for block play, art and craft/cooking, role play, small world and quiet activity. In the Kindergarten we meet all the requirements of the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage). Our play and other learning materials are mostly made of wood and other natural materials that allow for open ended play and the opportunity for each child's imaginative and creative play to be set free. Outside is a lovely garden with areas for physical play with loose part materials, water play, a mud kitchen, a large sandpit and allotment area. Children regularly visit the woods as an integral part of their learning.

We offer early years funding for 3 and 4 year olds and HMRC funding for two year olds. Children are able to continue their early years' experience at Annan, if they wish, by continuing into the infant and junior school for children up to the age of 11.

An independent primary school for 2 to 11 year olds

Annan School is a small independent primary school for 2 to 11 year olds set in a beautiful location between Lewes and Uckfield in East Sussex. At Annan we believe in educating children to believe in themselves and reach their own unique potential. Relationships are really important to us and as a small school we work hard to ensure children learn to respect each other and adults. It is the quality of relationships within the school which most often strikes visitors and newcomers and we know have the biggest impact on children's willingness to learn.

Our small classes allow teaching staff to build close relationships with children respecting each child's individuality and giving each child personal attention. We value and celebrate each child's achievements with genuine praise and appreciation. We understand that everyone learns in different ways and want to create an environment in which everyone can develop as confident, thoughtful learners who are happy, love learning and make outstanding progress.
